Pottery Studio Technician

Community Clay is seeking an experienced pottery studio tech.

Schedule and employment details

• Hours: 30-40 hours per week.

• Employment type: 3 months 1099 contract, then W2.

• Base rate $22/hr​, with regular opportunities for raises.  

About the Role

Studio Technicians keep Community Clay's kilns, materials, equipment, and workspaces
operating safely and efficiently.

This is a hands-on position for someone who enjoys ceramics, physical work, problem-solving,
and supporting a creative community. We are looking for applicants who can make this work a
consistent priority and commit to a dependable weekly schedule.

Personality matters. The right person is friendly, approachable, reliable, adaptable, and willing to
learn. Applicants must have ceramics experience, but we can provide training to fill gaps in
technical knowledge.

Primary Responsibilities

Technical Operations

• Load and unload electric kilns.

• Assist with kiln schedules and firing records.

• Perform routine kiln and kiln-shelf maintenance.

• Reclaim, process, and pug clay.

• Mix glazes using established recipes.

• Grind private lesson, event, and class pieces.

• Prepare and restock clay, glazes, tools, and other materials.

• Assist with equipment installation, maintenance, and repair.

• Unload clay deliveries and move clay throughout the building, including upstairs.
   

Studio Care

• Help keep the studio clean, organized, and safe.

• Complete laundry and routine cleaning as assigned.

• Assist with storage reorganizations, building maintenance, and studio projects.

• Address immediate cleaning needs when noticed.

• Report cleaning or maintenance concerns that require additional attention.

Studio Technicians do not manage the overall cleaning schedule, inventory system, or staff
assignments. However, they are expected to notice problems, communicate them, and help
when something needs immediate attention.
 

Qualifications

Required

• Previous ceramics experience.

• Ability to safely lift and move up to 50 pounds.

• Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, and work near the ground.

• Ability to perform repetitive and physically active work.

• Dependable attendance and consistent weekly availability.

• Clear and professional communication.

• Friendly and approachable demeanor.

• Ability to use Slack.

• Willingness to receive training, direction, and feedback.

• Strong judgment and ability to adjust when priorities change.

• Trustworthiness.
   

Preferred

• Previous Studio Technician experience.

• Experience with electric kilns.

• Basic glaze-mixing experience.

• Clay reclaim and pugging experience.

• Equipment maintenance or construction experience.

• Availability for 20–30 hours each week.

• Access to a vehicle for occasional studio errands.

Safety

Studio Technicians are expected to:

• Follow kiln, glaze, silica, equipment, and material-safety procedures.

• Use all required protective equipment.

• Keep work areas clean, safe, and organized.

• Report hazards or unsafe conditions immediately.
